1st lesson- Safety: Reviewed the Never Never Rules and the 3Rs. Talked about the Always Ask First Rule! It's important that the adults in charge of us know where we are and what we are doing. Asking adults first helps us know what is safe for us! Puppy returned with his friend Snail to tell us about a neighbor asking them to come play a video game at his house. They asked their babysitter before going over. We also heard a story about a little girl who is swimming and someone wants to take her picture. She is assertive and tells them she needs to ask her mom first.
2nd lesson- Bullying Prevention: We talked about what bullying is- mean or hurtful (to bodies belongings or feelings), over and over, on purpose. It is one sided (not a conflict between friends). We did some practice scenarios to help us recognize what is and is not bullying. *We also talked about how there are lots of behaviors that are not bullying, but are still unkind or have consequences. It's okay to ask adults for help with those situations, too!*
We watched a video about a girl making fun of a boy who wears glasses. He uses the 3Rs to stop the bullying.
In 1st-5th we talked about Bullying Prevention: We talked about what bullying is- mean or hurtful (to bodies belongings or feelings), over and over, on purpose. It is one sided (not a conflict between friends). We discussed some scenarios to help us recognize what is and is not bullying. *We also talked about how there are lots of behaviors that are not bullying, but are still unkind or have consequences. It's okay to ask adults for help with those situations, too!* Each grade had video content to support the lesson
1st grade
We watched two videos. The first was about a girl whose friend is pushing her and making fun of her when she gets upset. Then we watched a video about a boy who is being bullied on the bus. Both kiddos use the 3Rs to stop the bullying.
2nd grade
We watched two videos. One was about a girl who is made fun of because of the coat she wears. The other was about a boy who is bullied on the playground. Both kiddos use the 3Rs to stop the bullying.
3rd grade
We watched two videos. One was about a boy who prefers to learn about bugs rather than play at recess. The second was about a girl whose friend makes her do things she doesn't want to do (carry her books, giver her her snack). Both kiddos use the 3Rs to stop the bullying.
4th grade
One class saw both videos this week, the other two classes will catch up in their next class. The first video was about a girl who is super mean to a boy in her class. We talked about how he and another kid in the class use the 3Rs to stop the bullying. The second video was about bystander power--people who see bullying happen have a LOT of power to make things better or worse. This video showed a girl being bullied by another player on her basketball team. The teammates have to decide if and how they will respond.
5th grade
We watched two videos. The first was about a friend who was nice when the girls were alone, but not so much when they were with other people. The second video was about bystander power--people who see bullying happen have a LOT of power to make things better or worse. This video showed a boy who was being bullied because he enjoyed art rather than sports. Another student in the class struggled with how to support him. We directly addressed the use of the word "gay" and how it is not acceptable to use the word in a hurtful or insulting way.
Every class also talked about how we should respect all people and who they are (how they look, dress, the activities they enjoy, etc.). We don't have to agree with everyone or even like everyone, but we MUST be respectful.
