During the first two lessons, we talked about:
K-2: The 8 Never Never Rules
K-5: The 3Rs- Recognize, Refuse, Report
The Always Ask First Rule
Being assertive to refuse things that are unsafe
We talk about and practice using The 3 Rs and responding to different scenarios in which kids need to ask the adult in charge of them before going somewhere, doing something, or taking something from someone.
The third and fourth lessons were about touches. We described safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches. We talked about how all people have the right to assertively refuse any unwanted touches. We also talked about private body parts- defined as the parts of our bodies covered by a swim suit- and how no one has the right to touch or look at our private body parts without a reason to keep us healthy. We again practiced our 3 Rs- recognize is someone is breaking a rule, being unsafe, or making us feel uncomfortable, refuse any unwanted or unsafe touches, and report- always tell an adult about broken rules or anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or confused. No one should ask kids to keep a secret from the adults in charge of them unless it is a happy surprise. If there is any doubt or uncertainty-- TELL.
Parents, you should have gotten an email from the district with information about this unit and a code to access the lesson materials on the Second Steps website. You also should have gotten a letter the day your child had the last safety lesson. If you are the parent of a current, in-seat Fairview student and need that code again, please email me and I can send it to you.
